While cabin, cottage, or lodge living is (in my opinion) not suited to wall-to-wall carpeting - area or scatter rugs on wood, tile or slate floors offer the perfect alternative. They provide comfort and color while performing a useful function.

A mat at your entry way will catch the dirt and moisture and protect your floors.

I keep a mat at my kitchen sink - partly because I like the way it looks and partly because I like the way it feels on my feet when I stand at the sink.

Scatter mats by your bedside mean you don't have to endure cold feet when you first get out of bed on a chilly morning.

Area rugs can define a living area and pull the colors in the room together in a pleasing way.

A rug or mat in front of the fireplace says "come here and relax with me." Just don't put it close enough to risk catching fire!

Typically rustic or cabin rugs will be in warm shades - cranberry, red, dark green, moss, mustard, and taupe.

If you have a decor theme - such as bear or moose, you can pick up the theme in your rugs.

Larger rugs make a grand statement - smaller rugs are easy to maintain. You can vacuum both but you can also shake smaller rugs outdoors or beat them with an old fashioned carpet beater.

Don't forget rugs as an accent for your outdoor spaces as well.
