A page devoted to coffee lovers

coffee beans in cup

Why a "coffee lovers" page on a website about rustic living?

It's just a little passion we have for our coffee... especially that early morning brew, enjoyed on the deck overlooking the misty valley on calm cool mornings!

Yes, we love our coffee. Some might even say we're coffee snobs! Whatever... I wear the label proudly!

We roast our own green coffee beans either at our suburban home during the week in the gas oven, or in the gas barbecue here at the lodge.

If you appreciate really good coffee and you are not yet roasting your own beans, you might want to consider it.

Why?

Simply because roasting your own coffee means you will be sipping the freshest, bestest coffee you've ever tasted!

I've created a page about roasting coffee beans on a gas barbecue and one about brewing the perfect cup of coffee.

A couple of quick points about coffee roasting:

  1. It's easy. While there is some mystique around the process and it does take some practice to get the roasts you want, it is really not very difficult at all.
  2. It's fast. Contrary to what some people think, it only takes about 20 - 30 minutes, start to finish.
  3. It's inexpensive. If you buy good coffee, you will undoubtedly save money. And, as the link above shows, you don't need expensive roasting equipment!
  4. Your fellow coffee lovers (spouse, family, friends) will all love you for becoming passionate about your coffee roasting!
  5. Organic, fair trade green coffee beans are easy to obtain over the Internet! A quick Google search will reveal many options.

So enjoy! You'll soon be sipping unbelievably fresh coffee... and believe me, it does make a difference!

Two of my favorite books about coffee are listed to the right.

If you're seriously interested in home coffee roasting, Kenneth Davids is extremely knowledgeable. His Home Coffee Roasting: Romance and Revival is an excellent resource (although he doesn't cover the gas barbecue method that I show on the video!).

And for a more general discussion about coffee, including information about coffee growing regions and methods, grinding, brewing, as well as a bunch of great recipes featuring coffee, The Joy of Coffee by Corby Kummer is a great investment.
