Country cooking, by its very nature, is all about hearty flavors, simplicity, and sharing.
The reason for this section of the website is simple: we often comment on how well we eat at the lodge!
It's so true... and most of the time that eating is done in the company of good friends and family members. Many meals are prepared by a bunch of us each contributing a dish or two. It makes for a crowded kitchen at times! But no one has been threatened with a butcher knife yet!
In fact, the experience of creating some of our most memorable lodge meals has been one of the highlights of our lodge living!
As long as the wine is flowing all seems to go smoothly in the kitchen! (well maybe not at breakfast time - then we need good coffee!)
Since good food is best shared, this section of the website is our way of sharing with you by offering some of our favorite recipes.
Our beef short ribs recipe is a hearty melt-in-your-mouth meal. Great after an active day in the country.
Check out our slow cooked roast recipe. A surprise ingredient makes this recipe so tasty it's one you'll use over and over.
My father made the best meatballs - we remember him fondly every time we make Dag's sweet and pungent beef balls.
Our daughter-in-law Cheryl introduced us to yam fries. They've become a family favorite!
Our roast turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce recipes are also family favorites and family traditions.
< p>We first started using this granola recipe over 30 years ago. And it stands the test of time!Newer favorites are a recipe Cheryl created - banana pancakes made with nut flour, and a delicious recipe our daughter Kari shared with us for nummy nut muffins.
This will be an ever growing part of the site, so come back often to check out what's cooking! In fact, sign up for the RSS feed so you'll know when something new has been added!
What you'll find in our recipes is an emphasis on organic foods... from our meats (we only eat grass fed beef due to the health benefits) to vegetables to dairy to eggs. We limit our use of processed foods and, as much as possible, make things from scratch.
We also believe that too many carbohydrates are not a good thing. So you'll find recipes that feature more protein, vegetables, and healthy fats.
If this is a new idea for you (and even if it's not), we highly recommend reading Gary Taube's Good Calories, Bad Calories. It's a real eye-opener and challenges many commonly touted aspects relating to dietary fat and carbohydrates.
"Good food plus country living plus friends and family equals the perfect combination!"
