When we got our lodge, one of our goals was to create the perfect guest bedroom, with a similar combination of rustic and luxury that we've enjoyed over the years at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.
At our lodge we have first rate cooks, cleaners, and servers - unfortunately, that's us, but never mind - we can still offer a warm and welcoming rustic guest bedroom.
Our guest bedroom is still a work in progress but following are some ideas and suggestions to create a rustic retreat for your family and friends.
A comfy bed - Provide your guests with the best quality bed you can afford. You don't want to sleep on an old lumpy mattress - neither do your guests! As well, buy the biggest bed the room will accommodate - or - for more flexibility have two twin beds that can be used separately OR pushed together to create a king size bed (you can buy connectors). And of course, you'll want to play up the rustic charm with log, brass, or wrought iron headboards. See rustic bedroom furniture.
Fine bedding - There's nothing like quality, high thread count sheets, a fluffy down comforter, and quality pillows (2 per person). We also highly recommend a feather bed mattress. It's heavenly. Rustic plaids or wildlife motifs compliment the cabin decor. In cooler months, provide extra blankets for your guests' comfort. See more bedding on our rustic bedding page.
Let there be light - Ensure your guest bedroom has adequate lighting, especially for reading. We find that so many rooms don't have good lighting for reading in bed that my husband and I always travel with our headlamps. That way (although we may look goofy) we can always get our reading in (they're also invaluable for such tasks as going to the woodshed at night, plumbing repairs in dark corners, etc.)! A small night light is also helpful for your guests. See rustic lamps.
Hello darkness, my old friend - Shades or curtains are important to ensure privacy and light control so your guests can get a good night's sleep and sleep in as long as they desire. In addition, window treatments can be an important design element defining the rustic character of the room. See our window cover pages.
A place for clothing - Hangers (6 - 8) and space to hang up clothes. If you don't have a cupboard or an armoire, purchase an inexpensive over the door rack OR place some simple but decorative hooks on the wall to hold a some basics such as a robe, coat, clothes, or a purse. If your guests will be staying a while, it's nice to provide a dresser with some drawers for their clothing too.
Essential bits and pieces - There are some must have accessories that will contribute to your guests' comfort. An alarm clock or clock/radio, an assortment of magazines, and some good books (classics or page turners), a notepad and pens, a tray with some fresh fruit or cookies, a bottle of water, and some interesting water glasses.
Set out fresh towels - For your guest's comfort you should provide one large bath towel, one hand towel, and a washcloth for each guest. And of course you can continue the rustic theme with your choice of towels.
Toiletries - Have a basket (in the guest room or thebathroom) with a selection of sample size toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soaps, toothpaste, moisturizing cream, etc. You can get them in stores, or if you travel, you can collect those you don't use from your hotel rooms.
Flowers - Being a romantic at heart, I think fresh flowers add an welcoming touch to any room. In a rustic environment, go with wild flowers or perhaps a dried flower arrangement. In the spring, depending on where you live, you could have a bouquet of pussy willows. In the fall, go with sunflowers and a harvest theme.
A chair - If your room is large enough, a comfy chair or two with a reading light will add to its comfort.
Television - Some people enjoy a TV in the guest room. At our lodge we choose NOT to have any televisions, but if you do have TV, you might want to also have a DVD player and a few movies on hand.
Wireless Internet - If your cabin has wireless internet access (ours does), your guests may want to take advantage of the opportunity to check their email (so many people travel with their laptops today). If you have the space, consider providing a small rustic desk or table, a chair, and a good lamp.
Mirrors - I always enjoy having a full length mirror in the room - and there are so many wonderful rustic mirrors to choose from. At the very least, have a wall mirror for your guests' convenience. See our selection of mirrors.
Slippers - If the floors are cold, consider providing your guests with a pair of slippers.
Your guests will appreciate the care you put into your guest bedroom and the welcoming feeling it will convey. Just be sure the people you invite are people you want to come back again, and again!
