When I was a teenager visiting my grandmother's country home I discovered the allure of the hammock.

She had a simple cotton one slung in a green metal frame. I recall working pretty hard helping create her rock garden - maneuvering some pretty big boulders was exhausting!

My reward was some home-made lemonade and a chance to lie down and read in the hammock for an hour or two before supper. Ever since then I have cherished that kind of magical... almost mystical... time.

The cottage where we spent summers with our own children had a terrific Mayan hammock that stretched out to fit two or three adults... and even more children. There was also a chair swing which was a reasonable alternative when the hammock was occupied.
