Why moose decor? ... the moose, that venerable symbol of wilderness, strength, independence, and patience. What better theme to use to decorate a special place in your rustic home? Or indeed, to carry throughout your lodge or cabin!
The Moose
This mammal, the largest member of the deer family, fascinates us for many reasons. The first, I believe, is the majesty of the beast. Large and powerful with the bull moose carrying that magnificent rack of antlers. They also tend to be rather reclusive, making them that much more alluring. Spotting a full-grown bull moose is quite rare. We've seen many cow moose along with calves, but have only seen a handful of bulls. Seeing one is a treat!
The scientific name is Alces alces. In Europe they are known as elk, whereas in North America elk refers to the second largest member of the deer family.
Their habitat extends throughout the northern hemisphere. In North America they can be found in the boreal forest areas from Alaska to Newfoundland as well as throughout the rest of Canada. We took the photo to the left in the Yukon. They have also been seen in New England, upstate New York, Minnesota, Michigan, Utah and Colorado. They can be found throughout northern Europe, Russia, Scandinavia, and Mongolia.
A bull moose can stand as tall as 7 feet (2.1 meters) at the shoulders and can weigh as much as 1,500 lbs (720 kg). These are LARGE animals!
Moose can often be found near the edge of lakes or in muskeg and other swampy areas. They are strong swimmers and can dive up to 30 feet or over 5 meters to eat plants growing in a lake bed.
