Smoke alarms save lives!

Having properly working smoke alarms in your lodge or cabin is critical for fire safety. A dead unit is worse than none at all in that it can give a false sense of security.

Unfortunately many people neglect to change the batteries in their smoke detectors on a regular basis. And, in fact, the majority of people will admit to removing the batteries from smoke alarms to silence the alarm or to use the batteries in other devices, such as a TV remote control or toys. Let's get our priorities straight! This could mean the difference between life and death.

Test your smoke alarms regularly.

Replace the batteries at least once a year - perhaps when you open your place in the spring.

Have smoke alarms on every level of your home.

If your smoke alarms are more than 10 years old, get new ones... they are inexpensive... and worth every penny!

Have a fire escape plan in place, and ensure that everyone in the household knows it and has practiced it. Most people never give any thought to preparing and practicing a home fire escape plan and fire drill for their lodge or cabin. This is easy to do and could be a lifesaver.

If your smoke alarm is triggered regularly by cooking, consider relocating it rather than removing the battery.
