Twig Furniture - what's more rustic? Buy it or do it yourself!

“A single twig breaks, but the bundle of twigs is strong.”
Tecumseh Shawnee Chief

twig furniture
Twig furniture has probably been around longer than any of us realize. People are very resourceful and in the past created comfort from natural materials by necessity. Today, we choose this furniture for its charm.

The "style" of willow or bentwood furniture became popular in the late 1800's as furnishings for rustic summer estates in the US northeast (Adirondack).

Twig furniture can be made from a variety of woods but willow is a popular choice. Did you know there are more than 250 different species of willow around the world?

One of the appealing things about this rustic furniture is that each piece is individually made. It's environmentally friendly - made from sustainable, renewable materials.

This type of furniture is made from young sapling trees bent while they are still green, or from flexible willow. The natural curves and bends of the wood are used to create one of a kind pieces that are sturdy and beautiful.

Add a touch of elegance and charm to your garden or cabin

Popular in the garden, porch or deck, you can also use twig furniture inside your lodge or cabin. It can be used for picture frames, screens, chairs, love seats, and tables.

There are many options for purchasing twig or willow furniture but you can also make your own for only the price of a few nails (and some hard work!). One of our favorites, especially for beginners, is A Bend In The Willows by Paul Dolphin (see link below). It features step by step instructions, using both illustrations and photos, for a number of classic projects.
